We seek an enthusiastic, team oriented, problem solver to join our Molecular Biology group. The role will report to the Scientist III, Molecular Biology


  • Develop genetic tools through application of WGS and transcriptomic data to enable the engineering of Checkerspot’s platform organisms
  • Design and execute on molecular genetic strategies to improve strain phenotypes including productivity, yield, and production of novel molecules
  • Utilize bioinformatics and DNA sequence analysis techniques to design and validate successfully engineered strains
  • Represent the Molecular Biology team in R&D meetings by presenting data from routine experiments as well as strain development and qualification efforts
  • Working closely with the Fermentation Development and Analytical teams to assess impacts of strain engineering on key performance metrics 
  • Prepare and review SOPs to document method development
  • Assist in the preparation of written examples for IP and regulatory filings 
  • Support Checkerspot’s stated Public Benefits to promote the advancement of environmental stewardship, including by developing more sustainable higher performance materials, and by democratizing materials and tools for innovative product development for the betterment of local communities


  • Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree with a minimum of 3-6 years of relevant industry experience, or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related disciplines
  • Experience with standard molecular biology/molecular genetic techniques including PCR, qRT-PCR, cloning, library screening, Southern & Western blotting, DNA and RNA purification
  • Hands-on experience constructing and screening engineered bacterial, fungal or microalgal strains or mammalian cell lines for producing novel molecules and improving productivity and yield; experience with developing new, robust screening tools and marker-less transformation strategies is desirable
  • Command of biochemistry principles and concepts
  • Ability to manage large datasets and draw conclusions from them
  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and communicating results to management and external partners
  • Committed to safety in a laboratory environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
